Racing at BYLM
Racing is a relatively recent addition to BLYM's repertoire of activities. In about 1995 BLYM's growing membership, particularly those under the age of 19, voted to begin Sunday racing during the winter months at BLYM. Members of BLYM have participated in racing since the 1980's, however this new Sunday series marked the beginning of BLYM's whole hearted support for sail racing.
Since then, the racing facet of BLYM has grown considerably. We now run racing every Sunday from October through to April. Additionally, we host the Hertfordshire Youth County Regatta each year which attracts entries from throughout the county and is combined with the Volvo regatta to crown the best young sailor from BLYM.
In 2002, BLYM became an RYA Volvo Champion Club. This puts BLYM among the elite of UK Sailing clubs for providing racing activities for young people. In 2004 we also hosted our first class open meeting which was very successful. We intend to expand this program of racing events to include opens for Laser and Topper classes and possibly Wayfarer’s and a team racing competition.
BLYM also fully support the Hertfordshire Youth Dinghy Racing Squad (HYDRS) who provide race training and facilities to young people throughout Hertfordshire. Their activities include training around Hertfordshire (with several sessions at BLYM), coaching trips to larger venues and team entry to large regional and national competitions.
