Bury Lake Young Mariners (BLYM) is an award-winning local youth charity (No. 1102162) and we are run entirely by over 300 volunteers at the picturesque Rickmansworth Aquadrome.
For 40 years, we have promoted the development of life skills in young people through the medium of sailing and related activities and we take over 6000 people onto the water each year.
We operate an all-inclusive club and welcome new members. Please see the Membership pages for details.
All of our sailing and powerboat courses are certified by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and are available to anyone from aged 9 upwards to adults. We also offer short fun sessions for 7-9 year-olds.
This year, BLYM celebrates it's 40th anniversary and as such, we will be holding various events to celebrate. Keep an eye out for more details as the year progresses!
This year, on Sunday the 30th June, the Youth Team will be running their annual fun day! If you’ve loved sailing during BLYM’s courses, or want to come down to try it out for the first time, anyone is welcome. It is a day packed with activities on the water, from trying out some basic sailing with a fun twist, to having the opportunity to use stand-up-paddleboards with your friends, to learning how to create your own raft, all with a barbecue lunch to make sure everyone is ready for more activities in the afternoon. The Youth Team hope to see you all down at Blym for Fun Day very soon!
BLYM Newsletter - February 2024
We are excited to share some important updates and express our gratitude to our dedicated volunteers as we gear up for the 2024 season.
Updates to the BLYM teams
As part of our growth and evolution, we want to thank Ben Constable and Ed Bourton, who have served as BLYM's RYA Principal and Chief Sailing Instructor respectively. As they move forward in their careers they have decided it's time to hand these critical roles over. We warmly welcome Malcom Talbot and Sam King, who will be taking these roles on for this coming season.
As Sam King transitions into his new role as Chief Instructor, he's passing the torch for Instructor Development to Molly Losty. If you've completed your sailing qualifications and are passionate about sharing your knowledge with others, we encourage you to volunteer your time and refine your skills through our instructor training program. It's a fantastic opportunity to give back to the sailing community and gain valuable experience. For more information or to express your interest, please reach out to Molly directly.
Graham Thomas has decided it is time to hand over the responsibility of being BLYM’s Treasurer. Graham’s contribution has been significant and was reflected in the award he received at the Laying Up Supper. Graham is handing this role to Bhavesh Chauhan who has kindly volunteered to take on this critical role.
David Ridout will lead the BLYM Leadership Team (BLT), with a view to finding a new BLT chair towards the end of the year. The BLT is focused on ensuring the safe and efficient operational running of BLYM. It is comprised of a team of volunteers who are passionate about contributing to the day-to-day activities. We welcome interest in the BLT Chair role, or general interest in getting involved with BLT, to reach out to David Ridout or Mark Colston.
We also extend a warm welcome to André Roy, who has joined the Trustee team with significant experience in management, operating within charities/ not-for-profits and technology strategy. André is already well immersed in starting to shape BLYM's IT strategy (more news to come) and helping with refreshing the BLYM five-year strategy.
We also warmly welcome Lin Blake who will be working with Chris Hallet on securing new wardens and keeping our volunteers engaged.
Thank you also to Paul Childerhouse (a.k.a. Chilly) for volunteering to take on the management of BLYM’s facilities. Chilly has already been working hard to get everything ready for the upcoming season. He is also taking a leading role in moving the final stage of the building project forward, including the liaison with our contractors and the Three Rivers District Council (TRDC). If you notice anything that needs attention, please let Chilly know.
Save the Date - Opening Saturday 23 March
BLYM reopens for Splash Day on 23 March, feel free to come down to help reopen the base – all help is welcome. General Sailing will then continue every Saturday throughout the season. The Splash Club, an after-school program, starts on 29 May and continues every Wednesday from 4 pm.

Fundraising
Every donation helps, and every pound and penny raised will make a huge difference to our charity.
There are many ways you can help raise money; you can buy a brick that will be embossed with your personal message and displayed in the new clubhouse building. These bricks will allow future generations to recognise the contributions of members past and present. You can use LocalGiving to make a one-off donation or set up a monthly donation or you can use easyfundraising and we can collect free donations every time you buy something online (it won't cost you a penny extra to help us raise funds).

LocalGiving - Magic Little Grants
Dear LocalGiving,
We would like to express our sincerest gratitude for your generous contributions to the BLYM sailing charity through the Magic Little Grants initiative.
In April 2020, with your help, we were able to purchase new radios to provide fast and efficient communication between instructors and between the duty warden and instructors. This grant has greatly improved our safety coverage and we are immensely grateful for your support.
In May 2021, you once again provided us with additional funding towards the purchase of our RS Zests. The Zests arrived at the start of June and since then, we have been able to provide 1,000s of sailing sessions to juniors from across our community. Your generous sponsorship through our donation site on LocalGiving has allowed us to make a real difference in our sailing charity and we are incredibly thankful for your support.
Finally, in May 2022, we were granted £500 towards the purchase of new buoyancy aids. This grant has allowed us to provide the necessary safety equipment for our all of our sailors, and we cannot thank you enough. We are truly grateful for your continued generosity and support and thank you for your commitment to helping our charity.
Best regards, BLYM
